Are you looking to do a site completely in Flash or mix it up w/ html? You might want to just check out the tutorials on Flash. I agree that doing thumbnails(since they are made to be done quickly) and doing research makes your design process stronger. Here at school we get a week to do our projects, sometimes longer than that. After experiencing a little bit of the real world in an internship, I have realized that you don't have much time to do those things; ometimes less than a day. It was really helpful to see how different every designer solve their design problems. :) I don't quite understand what you mean on the last question... I am gonna try to answer it... I think, as students, we learn from the professionals and teachers the method that is proven working to solve a design problem, I don't think people get stuck in the rut of designing... but I do think that some people are just scared/too lazy to explore new options and open themselves up to possibilities that design field offers.
