3. Passion and Guts
On the 57th street I visited an exhibition by Anselm Kiefer, probably the most famous German artist of his time and certainly the most expensive: His work sells for millions of dollars.
A number of year ago I had seen a retrospective of his work at MOMA where he had shown huge canvases as big as 60×15 feet in size.
So at the Marian Goodman gallery in New York, Anselm Kiefer showed ALL of his work that he owns. He pilled it up 20 feet high, rolled up canvases mixed with canvases on stretchers, all the work literally destroying each other through its own weight.
On the white walls he wrote with a piece of chalk:
20 Jahre Einsamkeit: 20 years of loneliness.
