3. Passion and Guts

On the 57th street I visited an exhibition by Anselm Kiefer, probably the most famous German artist of his time and certainly the most expensive: His work sells for millions of dollars.
A number of year ago I had seen a retrospective of his work at MOMA where he had shown huge canvases as big as 60×15 feet in size.
So at the Marian Goodman gallery in New York, Anselm Kiefer showed ALL of his work that he owns. He pilled it up 20 feet high, rolled up canvases mixed with canvases on stretchers, all the work literally destroying each other through its own weight.

On the white walls he wrote with a piece of chalk:
20 Jahre Einsamkeit: 20 years of loneliness.

Brain Works.

The Technique for Producing Ideas:

1. Think about the project from any point of view–your mom’s, yours, from the point of view of color, or form–and write each response down on a single index card.

2. Spread all the index card out on a big table and see if you can find the relationship between the different thoughts.

3. Forget about the whole thing.

4. The idea will strike you miraculously when you least expect it.

update-sort of.

Knowing what i want to do with my life is the most important thing in my life this time. ( since I’m graduating this September! wooooohooo!) I would like to work hard for it though, its not fun if i know what I am or what I want to be the second I was born.
although, believe me, its so tempting to know that way ahead of everyone.
and that makes me wonder, who’s to say who’s first, and who’s to say what matters? really?
I’m talking nonsense right now.
but, though… I feel like there’s a lot of truth to it. don’t you think?

Okay, update on the website:
I am working on it. I am trying to personalized it, and really “perfect” it, whatever perfect means, and mind you, its 1.13am. and I’m exhaaausteeed.
well…. yeah, thats how much I have.
I am working on an illustration in the about me page right now, its moving rather slow, but hey, its picking up speed!
And working on what to say about myself, always have a problem with that one….
and also, of course working on a ton of other homeworks in other classes.
trying really hard to keep up with everything. man! i’m kinda tired.

Well….I just thought it would be nice for me to update something on here and at the same time talking to people who wants to listen to me ( or reading. ) ranting and being… me. hahaha.

anyway… uhm. what was I saying again?

i’m gonna head to bed. and, write some more… soon. i hope. when I have something real solid to work on, and on a random note:
I wanna go bungee jumping really bad right now.

Target. :)

To be honest, the whole purpose of this personal website of mine didn’t alter very much after a quarter. ;p. I am kind of torn between the name jovietajane.com and janekusuma.com. (So I might have to go and get votes from people.)
The purpose of this website is to showcase projects and artworks that I have done for the past couple of years. I am going with a simple and easy accessible layout for this website. Even though it is a simple website, I would like to make sure that it still gauges interest from my target audiences. I would like to go for duo tone, or maybe 3 tones color for the layout, because most of my artworks are already very colorful, so the colors and a little bit of illustration/design on it will work as a background instead of fighting for attention with my actual displayed artworks. This site also provides my contact so that my target audiences that are interested in the site and my artworks can reach me. Another thing I would like to do is to make this site a place of networking between fellow designers and artists. In the contact section, I will add a form for fellow designers and anyone who is interested to leave a message, comments and suggestion for improvement. Also, an improved and informative blog would be included as an external link for my website. (I am hoping my word press blog would develop well in the next couple of months, so it will be up and running whenever I graduate. Which is soon! September can’t come any sooner. ☺ ) I am also open for collaboration works with fellow designers and artists.

Goals and Objective:
To challenge myself to create a product (in this case, a website) that follows the function and meet professional standard in design industry. Also, to learn how to code properly with naming conventions that will communicate well.
To showcase my artworks and interact with fellow designers and anyone who is interested in my artworks.
To get myself projects from different range of clients from different media.

Target Audience:
Fellow designers/artists (for collaboration projects and to expand network.)
Different range of clients: experimental, corporate, small businesses.
Creative and Art directors that are looking for a specific graphic/illustration style.

And I love TARGET, the store. ( some random thoughts to make things a little bit easier to get through. )

Quick!

A quick update, I have been really busy lately. I promise I’ll be more active after the 10th of May! ( can’t come sooner!!!!) but, anyway, so… yeah, uhm, I have always been doing my concept design in just colors and simple shape. So I am sticking with that method right now, I don’t want to be bogged down by details and stuff like that either. I can’t stress enough that all I want for my website is to be simple and easy to navigate, so that viewers won’t get distracted by a lot of stuff that is going on and focus on my portfolio.

Well, I’m looking forward for the critique! See you guys in class!

I am just going to post this link because I think this site is perfect for the purposes and goal that I would love to meet for my own personal website, I am interested in learning a little bit of flash, because well, I just want to, so if there’s anyone out there wants to take the time ( I probably am going to be a pain in the butt with all the questions I ask.) to teach me, I would be so grateful.

So… I like the layout, the flow, and how clean it is, the sizing of her works on the website are perfect, the viewers only need to scroll left right, which is pretty awesome. I would like to achieve that while throwing in more design elements and color. gotta love ‘em color, ait? okay… i am officially disoriented and exhausted. long day tomorrow. see you guys in class!

Site search.

First off, I would like to jog out important things to put in my website:

Contact — 1)My name ( believe me, if I don’t write it down, i might forget it. ;p )2)Email, 3)phone number, 4)contact form.

Works — Categories: 1)Design, 2)Illustrations, 3)photography, 4)personal ( maybe design explorations), very important thing to have in my work pages is to have a brief explanation on what the project is about, i missed that important point last time.

About Me — Brief explanation about me, where I come from and what’s my goal for the future. I think it will be nice to give out “where do i see myself 5 years from now.” I seriously don’t know where I am going to be in 5 years, but I’ll think about it. I think I should put my blog in this section, but I don’t know. I might have to have separate link for the blog. ( I haven’t been thinking about that part too much.)

I think that is about it, if there’s anything I am missing, please tell me. ;p

Things to avoid:

Clutter, clutter, clutter. I don’t have any picture in my head on how my new website is going to look like, but the only thing I know is, I want a simple layout, easy to navigate but still portraying my ideas and creativity.

one of the website layout i would like to avoid:

Laure Nollet , She has amazing works, but i wish the whole layout is cleaner and easier to access. Check out her illustrations! It will be easier for the visitor to look at just one of her work, and focus on one work in an eye frame? instead of trying to scroll down and click on every single images that she has in there. But of course her works are worth the pain scrolling up and down for.

It is great though that she has a place for people to comment on each works that she has, it is kind of like a blog set-up.

James Jean, he’s AWESOME! My current obsession is his ad for PRADA’s new fashion line. check it out here:  Trembled Blossoms.

His website is the kind of website I would like to have, a simple, clean, easy to manage and also easy to navigate for users. What I really need to keep in mind if not to have too many design that would distract the user from concentrating on my portfolio. It looks like the only images that he has is for his name, and his portfolio, I am a little bit crazy about typefaces, I would like to have control over everything on my website, especially the typefaces. But, I know what matters is to have a website that loads quickly, so… I’m still deciding. ( haha, I do have control issues. ;p )

A flash site that is worth visiting, I think it is pretty awesome, Sagmeister.Inc

I like the layout that he has for his works, sample layout I would love to somehow incorporate this type of layout and explanation into my own website. I think what important is to get the main idea/concept that i have for my work out there, I have been pretty bad about doing that, I always have a hard time trying to explain things I do, AND I need to learn how to do that as soon as possible, because I am graduating, and it will be pretty bad if I don’t have sufficient communication skills.

That is all I have for now. I am still researching on design websites instead of just personal Illustration portfolios.

I have to apologize that I haven’t been able to post anything on here about my final project. Well, I had my Introduction to Scripting Languages class last quarter, and I loved it, that is why I am in this class, even though I am not required to take this class. Last quarter for my final project I decided to work on my personal portfolio website. Well, I was examining the whole layout of my website, and there’s things in there that i can actually improve on. For example, I have the artworks, but I didn’t have the space to explain what the artworks are all about and what is my thinking process when I’m working on the artworks, which is really good to add because It helps the potential clients and people who visits my website understand what I am trying to convey.

So, yeah, I might reconstruct the whole look of the website and add on some of the little things that missed last time. I would post the screen shots of the website as soon as possible and maybe get some feed back from you guys!

Oh, yeah, and I am graduating next quarter, so it will be great to have the website up and running by the end of this quarter *crossing my fingers* I have soooo many things to do! I’m excited, and nervous at the same time.

Well, okay, I think that is about it, I might try to do some sketches as soon as possible and post it here. Again I am very sorry it took me forever to get to this.

Objectives.

01. I would love to gain more knowledge about css, xhtml and more importantly to be able to do the right codes that will work for (almost) all browsers.

02. I would love to be able to create my own portfolio website that flows and work well for me and the user.

03. I would love to have a website that communicates my work and my personal belief in art and design.

04. By the end of this quarter, hopefully I will be able to grasp a better understanding in how to develop a couple of personal frameworks. ( and also things that I think would be useful for me in the future.)

05. To be able to enjoy the frustrating yet interesting learning process. :p
